BTS finally announced its military service plans, and it will start sooner than anybody anticipated. According to news sources, HYBE, the music label behind BTS, has announced BTS plans to begin their military service. For the uninitiated, South Korea uses a “compulsory” military service for its citizens to contribute to duty enlistment. Under a conscription system to counterattack threats from North Korea, the home to BTS required all non-disabled men in the country to serve at least 18 months in the military by age 28.
Since BTS members, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, Jin, Suga, V, and Jungkook are in their early and late 20s, the military service rules also apply to them. However, with their contribution to the South Korean economy, and opportunities created by the group to represent Korea in different parts of the world, the fans expected the government to exempt BTS members from military service. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case, as the group has already started confirming their military enlistment procedure.
Will BTS go to the military in 2022?
According to the company’s post, the seven K-pop boy band BTS members will serve in the military services starting in 2022. As per HYBE, the first BTS member who will start the service would be BTS’s Jin, followed by the other 6 members of the group.
Under South Korean law, most healthy male members of society have to serve 18 months in the military. Since BTS are Korean citizens, they are required by the government to serve in the military. However, K-pop idols of other nationalities should be exempted from the rule since they are not Korean citizens. The music label revealed on Monday that they ended the debate over “will BTS go to the military?” and now we can see who is going to military duty first.

However, considering the overall popularity of BTS and the awards and business it brings to the country, the South Korean government might limit the time the seven members spend in the military.
